Journalist and researcher Saad Riaz has reportedly been taken into custody by personnel of the Counter Terrorism Department in the early hours of the morning, according to statements shared by his family and colleagues.
His family and colleagues claim that around 12 to 13 armed, masked individuals entered his residence at approximately 3:30 am and took him away without presenting any arrest warrant or legal documentation. They describe the incident as an unlawful detention and a violation of due process.
Following the incident, authorities registered an FIR alleging that Riaz was involved in distributing banned literature and had links with a proscribed organisation. The FIR further claims he was arrested from a mosque, a claim which his associates dispute, stating that available CCTV footage indicates he was taken from his home.
Riaz is a journalist, podcast host, and political science scholar associated with. His work has focused on regional and international political issues, including conflicts in Kashmir, Gaza, Afghanistan, and Syria. He has also conducted interviews with senior political figures and journalists in Pakistan.
In response to the allegations, his family and colleagues maintain that he has not been involved in any unlawful activity and has consistently worked within legal and professional boundaries. They further argue that he has previously engaged with state-linked institutions in professional capacities.
They have raised concerns over what they describe as retrospective justification of detention through the subsequent registration of an FIR, and have called the case an example of misuse of authority. They also allege contradictions in the official narrative regarding the place of arrest.
