The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has barred the government from appointing Higher Education Commission (HEC)'s chairman. The directives were issued during hearing of a petition seeking reappointment of Tariq Banuri as head of the HEC and against the HEC ordinance.
The court asked the government not to appoint a chairman until the next hearing. Secretaries of the cabinet division, law, education, HEC and the former HEC chairman were issued notices by the court.
The complainant's lawyer said that the ordinance was affecting just one person and that an ordinance cannot be enforced for an individual.
Buneri was appointed as the HEC chairman in 2018 by the then PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
