Cher, singer and star from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, has thanked Prime Minister Imran Khan in her gratitude for the release of Kaavan, an elephant confined in very poor conditions at the Islamabad Zoo. She claims to have been a fan of his ever since his cricketing days.
In a serious of tweets, Cher has also thanked Zartaj Gul Wazir and Zulfi Bokhari among others. A few days ago, she had been writing messages of thanks to the Pakistani government in caps.
Reactions in Pakistan have been mixed. While some have lauded her for her positive sentiments towards the current Pakistani government, others have pointed out that the release of the elephants was ordered by the Islamabad High Court and that the star may have misdirected her tweets.
Alarm over the treatment of the elephant Kaavan in the federal capital's zoo had been an ongoing issue, with over 200,000 signatures on a petition for the animal's release after it was revealed that chains had been used to confine it. Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court Athar Minallah has ordered that a "suitable sanctuary" be found for the elephant within 30 days. The court has also gave orders for other wildlife kept at the zoo to be relocated until the zoo is able to raise its standards of health and psychological care for the creatures.
