Ministry for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony has advised the federal cabinet to not include Ahmadis in National Commission for Minorities.
The ministry on Friday sent a summary on the formation of minorities commission to federal cabinet, arguing that Ahmadis should not be included in the commission because the matter is very sensitive on religious and historical grounds.
On Wednesday, a private channel 92 News reported that PM Imran chaired a federal cabinet meeting, in which the summary in this regard was tabled for approval. During the meeting, a number of federal cabinet members endorsed the inclusion of Ahmadis in the commission. However, later Religious Affairs Minister Noor-ul-Haq Qadri denied the news, saying that no decision was made regarding the said summary.
On Thursday, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, while expressing his concerns over the federal government’s decision, told a private news channel: “The opening of Ahmadis’ pandora box is beyond understanding. The Ahmadis neither accept themselves as non-Muslim minority nor do they accept the constitution of Pakistan. Under these circumstances, favouring Ahmadis is a joke with Pakistan that is unacceptable.”
Just after the news broke, a hateful campaign against the already persecuted Ahmadiyya community of Pakistan was initiated on soical media. The social media users severely criticised the federal government for including Ahmadis in the National Minorities Commission, however, the decision in this regard has not even made to date.
