ISLAMABAD: Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh announced an extension of three days on Sunday in the ongoing Asset Declaration Scheme.
Prior to the extension in question, government benches and the prime minister himself had asked the people to declare their assets subsequently as no further extension would be given after June 30.
While addressing media personnel along with Minister for Revenue Hammad Azhar, Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Sheikh stated that:
"There's been a lot of interest in the Asset Declaration Scheme," Sheikh further added, that the deadline had been extended to banking office hours on July 3."
We are giving people a final opportunity [to take advantage of the scheme] in case some people are still in the processor are facing difficulties wrapping it up, he said.
Dawn reported that according to Sheikh, the next step in the government's efforts for a documented economy will be a 'Benami Commission' that will look into benami properties.
During the last ten days, Prime Minister Imran Khan has appeared on various prime time television shows and also on national television asking people to benefit from the said scheme. Prime Minister has laid equal emphasis on the consequences of not complying with tax rules.

Sheikh was quoted by Dawn as saying, "That's why we are announcing that we are going to the International Monetary Fund program. We're sending a message to everyone out there that we're serious and ready to take hard decisions so we can propel ourselves along a growth trajectory."
"Our focus is to generate confidence in markets and put the reforms in a proper sequence. The idea is to do all this in phases, not abruptly."
