Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he will highlight the crises in Gaza and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), as well as other global issues.
Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and senior officials, the prime minister is set to address the UNGA and participate in high-level meetings focused on regional and international peace, security, and sustainable development. In his address, he will urge the international community to take decisive action to end the suffering of Palestinians and resolve prolonged occupations denying self-determination to Kashmiris and Palestinians. He will also speak on terrorism, Islamophobia, climate change, and Pakistan’s role in promoting peace as a member of the UN Security Council.
On the sidelines, PM Shehbaz will hold bilateral meetings with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, Kuwait’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. He will also participate in key UNGA events, including meetings of the Security Council, the Global Development Initiative, and a high-level climate action event.
Significantly, the prime minister will join a multilateral meeting hosted by US President Donald Trump, alongside leaders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Indonesia. The summit will focus on Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza, including proposals for post-war governance, humanitarian access, and reconstruction support, with discussions on Arab and Muslim contributions to stabilising the region.
Separately, Pakistan welcomed the recent recognition of Palestine by France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Portugal, and others. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, representing Pakistan at a high-level conference in New York, reaffirmed the country’s historic and unwavering support for an independent, contiguous, and viable Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
This visit underscores Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, international law, and global peace, reinforcing its longstanding role in supporting Palestine and advocating for Kashmir on the world stage.
