Frank Caprio, the retired Chief Judge of Providence Municipal Court in Rhode Island and star of the reality series Caught in Providence, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio rose to international fame for his unique approach to justice, blending humour, empathy, and compassion in his courtroom. The ABC series Caught in Providence showcased his interactions with defendants, often focusing on minor traffic offences, and highlighted his ability to treat people with dignity and kindness. Videos of his rulings have amassed over a billion views on social media, earning him the title of “the nicest judge in the world.”
“Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer,” his family wrote on Facebook. “In his honour, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day.”
Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-mast until Caprio’s burial, describing him as “a Rhode Island treasure” who showed “what justice with humanity can look like.”
Caprio served as chief judge from 1985 until his retirement in 2023. He became especially beloved for moments such as letting off a Pakistani student, Ahmad Salman, for three parking tickets and later inviting him to his family’s Sunday dinner, highlighting his belief in personal connection and fairness.
Earlier this year, Caprio revealed he had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2023, sharing updates with his 1.7 million Instagram followers and documenting his treatment with honesty and grace. His memoir, Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge, was published earlier this year, cementing his legacy as a jurist who wore “a heart” under his robe.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Caprio, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Frank Caprio leaves behind a lasting legacy of compassion, humour, and humanity that touched millions around the world.
