Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh made history on Saturday night by becoming the first Punjabi singer to headline London’s Wembley Stadium, turning the iconic venue into a celebration of Punjabi music and culture.

Opening his landmark concert with his signature declaration, “Punjabi Aa Gaye Wembley Oye!”, Dosanjh told thousands of fans that the occasion would “go down in the history books.”

The performance further cemented his position as one of the biggest Punjabi music stars on the global stage. Dressed in traditional attire, Dosanjh took to the stage shortly after 8 p.m., prompting a huge response from the crowd that continued throughout his more than two-hour performance.

He performed some of his biggest songs, including G.O.A.T., Lover, Hass Hass and Born to Shine, combining Punjabi music with elements of rap and hip-hop.

The concert drew a predominantly South Asian audience, although fans from a wider range of backgrounds were also present. Supporters arrived hours before the performance, with many describing Dosanjh as a defining figure in contemporary Punjabi entertainment.

During the show, fans sang along, waved lights and danced to his music. The atmosphere in the standing area near the stage was compared by some concertgoers to an Indian wedding, as audiences copied Dosanjh’s energetic dance moves.

Despite performing at a stadium with a capacity of about 90,000, Dosanjh maintained an intimate connection with the audience. He invited several fans onto the stage, including children and an elderly woman, taking photographs with them and presenting gifts.

He also paid tribute to spectators watching from the back rows, encouraging the crowd to applaud them and describing them as “full of heart.”

The concert concluded with an emotional performance of Main Hoon Punjabi, meaning “I am Punjab,” accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display.

For Dosanjh, the Wembley appearance represents another milestone in a career defined by international firsts. In 2023, he became the first Punjabi-language singer to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the United States. He has also appeared at the Met Gala and collaborated with international artists including Ed Sheeran and Sia.

His growing popularity has extended beyond music. Dosanjh is also a Bollywood actor and a major social media personality, with his humorous videos helping introduce him to audiences unfamiliar with Punjabi music.

Speaking before the Wembley performance, Dosanjh said reaching the stadium was particularly meaningful because of his journey from a village in Punjab to an international stage.

He said he wanted his fans to feel that they, too, could achieve such milestones.

Dosanjh also announced plans to perform in November at India’s Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, adding another major venue to his expanding international career.

For the singer and his millions of fans, Wembley was more than a concert. It was a statement about the growing international reach of Punjabi music and culture — and another historic first for Dosanjh.

As the night ended, he returned to the phrase that has become synonymous with his concerts: “Punjabi Aa Gaye Oye!”
