Police in Faisalabad have taken to giving people electric shocks using stun guns for not wearing face masks in public, as recorded by citizens on their mobile phones. Besides using illegal gadgets, the police are also slapping violators of SOPs and making them “stand with their faces to the wall” as punishment. A city administration officer has defended these tactics, saying it is important to enforce the donning of masks among the public to control the spread of coronavirus.
It is worth mentioning that the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called out these methods for being in direct violation of both Article 14 of the Constitution of Pakistan and the UN Convention Against Torture, to which Pakistan is a signatory.
