Fact Check: CM Murad’s Viral Photo At Shia Procession Is From 2018

A photo of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah standing alongside mourners at a Shia procession has been doing the rounds on social media with people claiming that the chief minister flouted his own government's social distancing restrictions by participating in a Youm-e-Ali procession held on Friday (yesterday). But the picture is actually from a 2018 Ashura procession in Karachi.

Among those who shared the misleading picture on their social media was politician and former military dictator Gen Zia ul Haq's son Ijaz Ul Haq. However, after being called out for misleading his followers, he deleted the tweet.

It has been confirmed that this photo and the news along with is was shared as a conspiracy and is in fact, fake news.

Earlier this month, PTI had called for Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to step down over his government’s alleged failures in dealing with the COVID-19 health emergency.

Around 50 lawmakers of the PTI, the Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan and the Grand Democratic Alliance have already signed the application that was submitted to the PA secretariat.
