As the Sindh government has begun enforcing a 15-day shutdown of all restaurants, parks and shopping malls in response to the threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the otherwise busy streets of Pakistan's largest city have begun to take on a deserted appearance. Traffic and travelers on Karachi's streets reduced greatly as the city's residents began life under partial lockdown and business owners sat outside their shops.
Weddings are being postponed due to the new regulations and industries such as transport and hotels are already feeling the impact of drastically reduced human activity. However, restaurants will continue to operate on a takeaway basis. Pharmacies and grocery stores are to remain functional too.
Sindh remains the hardest hit by Coronavirus cases so far, although experts warn that numbers of cases testing positive are based on how proactively the various provincial authorities are testing people.
