Why General Bajwa's Extension Was Inevitable?
Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to give a three-year extension to army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa. Gen. Bajwa was going to retire on Nov 26 this year. This extension will apply from his date of retirement. The notification issued by PM Office cites regional security situation as the reason for this decision. Undoubtedly, the current situation on borders is tenuous. The PPP government had also extended the term of Gen Kayani in 2010. In the past, civil-military relations have been difficult. However today the civilian and military leadership appear to be ‘on the same page’. With unanimity of views on internal and external challenges, this partnership is crucial given the ongoing US-Taliban talks and India's jingoism and most recently the annexation of Indian Held Kashmir.
