PESHAWAR: Universities have turned blind eye to sexual harassment at the campuses, said Justice Ikramullah during the hearing of a case at Peshawar High Court (PHC).
The sexual harassment of junior, senior, and graduate students – both women and men – by male and female faculty members, graduate assistants and other staff has became practice at the universities in Pakistan.
Most recently, a female student at University of Peshawar in International Relations Department moved the PHC against a professor for alleged harassment.
The student claimed that she got failed in the same Paper several times by a professor for not meeting his sexual demands, while she secured good grades in others.
Harassment is increasing with each passing day at universities, observed Justice Ikramullah.
He said three students from Peshawar had contacted him in person in two months to claim sexual harassment by professors, out of which one male student was harassed by female professors. “Several students have submitted applications to FIA over alleged harassment against university staff.”
Justice Ikramullah said a few days ago, similar cases were reported from Multan and Karachi universities and now a student at the University of Peshawar had showed courage to challenge the evil intentions of professor in the high court.
Separately, a female staff member at the University of Swabi has written a letter to Governor Shah Farman about alleged sexual harassment by Deputy Registrar Asif Baber.
She alleged that the deputy registrar had misused his authority at girls’ hostel university against which she raised her voice upon which Asif transferred her to another department.
She said the deputy registrar had allegedly promised promotion, if his demands were fulfilled. Several other female staff members were siding with the deputy registrar and had started blackmailing her, the letter read.
