Ahsan Iqbal Launches International Institute of Islamic Policy (IIIP) To Counter Extremism
Former Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal has launched the International Institute of Islamic Policy (IIIP) to work for conflict resolution and promote dialogue for an inclusive and peaceful Pakistan.

Iqbal made the announcement via an article in The News in which he described how the assassination attempt on him inspired the idea. “For last one year, I have been struggling to find a way to pay back for the gift of new life,” Ahsan wrote, describing how surviving after getting shot in 2018 made him think of a way to counter extremism.

He said that the IIIP will research and make efforts to represent the true image of Islam. “The IIIP will engage in research, outreach, dialogue and advocacy on the most pressing challenges of our times and promote true image of Islam based in peace, harmony and inclusiveness,” he said.

Iqbal said that globally, people were being divided on the basis of race, religion, and creed and that the ideological clash between Islam and the West was giving rise to ‘extremism’. He said the IIIP aims to build interfaith harmony and good relations between people from different religions and backgrounds.

“It will utilise a cross-sector approach to build mutual respect and partnerships between faith based and cultural civilisations across the world with the key emphasis on addressing social, economic and cultural determinants of a range of challenges that lead to religious extremism and discrimination.”

He urged people from the academia, journalists, religious scholars and members of the civil society to join the initiative to transform Pakistan into a truly inclusive and prosperous country envisioned by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

IIIP’s headquarters is going to be located in Narowal, and the Phase1 of the project is envisaged to be completed by cost of Rs500m.
