100-Word Editorial: Parliament Needs To Step Up Against The Move To Muzzle The Press

Shahzeb Jillani has been booked on charges of cyber terrorism, defamatory remarks and electronic forgery. His fault? Being critical of the government and the permanent institutions of the state. In authoritarian states media freedoms have no value. But Pakistan, at least on paper, remains a democracy. It is time that the parliament intervenes against this move to muzzle the press. Political parties need to get their act together otherwise the space will shrink further. More importantly, journalists, media bodies need to unite against this new wave of censorship. Let’s hope our courts will act in favour of the constitutional liberties.
