The Islamic State leader had been killed in a US special forces operation in the Barisha village in ISIS’s last stronghold, Idlib.
It has been reported that the Syrian Kurds were the key source of intelligence that led to Baghdadi’s killing.
According to US president Donald Trump, the raid had been carried by eight helicopters carrying US special forces troops.
Trump also stated that Baghdadi’s last moments were of ‘panic and dread’ as he was chased by military dogs before he detonated his suicide vest, killing himself and three children.
US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that Baghdadi’s death was a devastating blow to the remnants of the Islamic State.
The raid was made possible with the joint cooperation of Russians, Kurds, Turks and President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Esper stated that the raid was executed brilliantly and no US soldier was hurt in the operation. He added, "The disposal of his remains has been done, is complete and was handled appropriately in accordance with the law of armed conflict.”
The dog that chased Baghdadi in his last moment was injured and is currently recovering.
