The petitioner maintains that the government has 'failed' under the system currently in place in the country. He further stated that Islam prohibits wasting resources, but under the current setup, Pakistan's resources are being wasted.
Demanding the holding of a referendum to get public opinion on the system of government, the petitioner requested the top court to direct the PM and the federal cabinet to hold a referendum. Further, the petitioner appealed to the apex court to telecast the proceedings of the case live.
PM and the cabinet have been made respondents in the petition. This is the second time a petition seeking presidential form of government has been submitted in the SC.
Earlier on Thursday, the chairman of a little known political party Hum Awam Pakistan, Tahir Aziz Khan, filed a petition in the top court. The petition had taken a similar line and maintained that the people now want a change in the form of government and that a presidential system is the way forward.
