As the number of confirmed Coronavirus-positive cases in Pakistan rises to the 60,000-mark, the federal government is looking at its options on how to proceed in dealing with the global pandemic. The National Coordination Committee (NCC) is set to meet soon, with Prime Minister Imran Khan chairing the meeting.

Amid fears that the Covid-19 situation in Pakistan may be spinning out of control, the government is likely to look at two approaches towards the public health challenge posed by the pandemic. One possibility being considered is that of a two-week lockdown, according to government sources. Another option being examined is a smart lockdown. This would differ from the previous strategy of the same name by being stricter in zones which have a higher number of cases and more lenient where the number of infection cases is fewer.

The NCC will bring together representatives of all the federating units of Pakista, together with the administrations of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
