CJ Gulzar Stops Sindh Govt From Importing Luxury Cars Worth Rs4billion

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed on Friday stopped Sindh government from importing luxury vehicles costing around Rs 4 billion.

Justice Gulzar took notice of the development during the proceedings in a suo motu case relating to coronavirus. He remarked that the provincial government is importing vehicles worth billions when it does not have the funds to clean the drains. He observed that the vehicles were being brought for the rulers, with each costing around Rs 11.6 million.

The CJP went on to add that some people have been able to exploit the situation caused to the pandemic, however, the government has not been able to stop such practices. For instance, he noted, the price of the oxygen cylinder has increased manifold but the government failed to do anything about it.

In an earlier news report, it was revealed that Sindh government earns Rs111.85 million from the luxury tax on each high-powered vehicle.

The luxury tax is charged during the registration on the imported cars. Each such vehicle has an engine capacity of 3000cc and is taxed at the rate of Rs100,000. For each car ranging between 2000-2999cc, the tax rate starts from Rs 50,000. A minimum tax of Rs 5,000 tax is charged on all imported vehicles ranging from 1500cc to 1999cc.
