Munawar Hasan was born in Dehli, British India on 5 August, 1941. He migrated with his family to Karachi at the time of the partition of India. In 1963, he obtained a Master's degree in sociology and in Islamic Studies in 1966 from the University of Karachi.
He joined the student group National Students Federation and was made its president in 1959. But the major change came in his life when he became close to JI's student wing Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) and started to study the writings of its founder Syed Abul Ala Maududi and aide Naeem Siddiqui.
In 960, he joined the IJT and was elected its president of the university unit in Karachi and member of the Central Executive Council. He took the reins of the student wing in 1964 and served in the capacity for three consecutive terms.
Later, he started to work in research roles of the party and continued to do so until he became a member of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1967. He ran for the seat of the National Assembly in 1977. He served as JI's Assistant Secretary General in 1992-93 and became its Secretary General in 1993. He was elected the chief of the party in 2009.
It was in March 30, 2014 that he was replaced by Siraaj ul-Haq as the party's chief. Late Munawar Hasan was a coveted and revered leader in the party ranks and is known to have played an active role in the national mainstream politics.
