The march was held inside AMU campus on December 23 to express solidarity with those who had lost their lives in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
The march, though peaceful, was in violation of Section 144 of the Indian Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which prohibits assembly of more than four people. According to Indian law, all members engaging in ‘unlawful assembly’ are booked for rioting.
According to a report on Timesnownews, Senior Superintendent of Police Aakash Kulhari said that permission for the march had not been granted.
A fact-finding report on the clashes between UP police and AMU protesters on December 15 had accused law enforcement officials of engaging in ‘unprovoked violence’ in AMU.
The report, titled 'The Siege of Aligarh Muslim University', says that there existed no proof of violence from the students.
The report also holds responsible the administration of AMU, district administration and police for failing to protect the campus from the brutality of UP police.
It also revealed that a PhD student had to have his hand amputated due to injuries resulting from a stun grenade explosion.
