The victim, Asma Rani, was a medical student who was gunned down in Kohat in 2018 for refusing marriage proposal of the convict. The slain woman's family had told the court that Asma was heading home in an auto rickshaw along with her sister-in-law when Mujahid Afridi shot her dead.
Afridi is the relative of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Kohat leader Aftab Alam. According to the victim's sister, PTI MNA and former federal minister Sheharyar Afridi had fully backed and helped the accused till the conclusion of the case.
The victim had received three bullets and was taken to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
In a video message issued from the hospital bed, Asma had said that Mujahidullah Afridi was the one who attacked her.
The accused had then managed to escape from the country, but he was later taken into custody from Dubai in 2018 through Interpol.
