As many as nine people lost their eyesight on Wednesday when the paramedical staffer of Abbottabad’s Ayub Teaching Hospital administered them a wrong injection.

DAWN reported that the Medical Director (MD) Prof Ahsan Aurangzeb of the hospital has formed a committee to look into the matter. The report quoted the top official as saying that a special eye injection was given to 11 critical yet needy patients in the operating theatre last Friday to improve blood circulation in their eyes under special protocol.

“Later, nine of them complained of vision loss prompting the administration to send the injection with other material to the lab for examination. The injection is very costly and is provided to patients by the hospital,” he said.

Hospital Director Dr Nadeem assured that strict action against the relevant staff members would be taken in case of any negligence.

Earlier, ARY News reported that the MD of the hospital had confirmed the news that at least nine patients, including a former player of Pakistan football team, Afsar Hussain, lost their eyesight due to the injection at the eye department of the healthcare facility.

The news outlet quoted him as saying that the injection was sent for laboratory examination and the real cause of the incidents would be known after the laboratory report is received.
