Habib University has issued a clarification over reports of author Mohammed Hanif being 'shown the door'. The university says his contract had ended and the literature department is being reorganised after the demise of its founder, Professor Asif Farrukhi.
The Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, Dr. Chris Taylor said in a notice, "Habib University has been and remains an admirer of Muhammad Hanif's impressive work - both in the fields of literature and journalism. We were very fortunate to have him with us in residence as a distinguished visiting faculty member this past academic year. His was a one year appointment in our literature program. We have expressed our gratitude to Muhammad Hanif for his work with us this year, and we have also expressed our hope that he might be able to join us again in the future. This was not his first time teaching with us.
There was absolutely no pressure on Habib University from any quarter in this matter. It is simply the case that as his one year contract came to an end he inquired if we wanted to extend his contract.
We thanked him and explained that following the recent tragic demise of Professor Asif Aslam Farrukhi, who led our literature program, we are currently engaged in reorganizing our literature program. In the wake of this process we are not currently in a position to extend his contract as he proposed.
Again, we have enjoyed and benefited from Muhammad Hanif's previous service at Habib University, including over this past year. As we have conveyed to him already, we also hope that he will serve as a distinguished visiting faculty member in the future."
A day after academic Ammar Ali Jan announced that he was forced to resign as a professor at Forman Christian (FC) College, renowned author and journalist Mohammed Hanif haf tweeted that he was fired from Karachi’s Habib University.
While responding to a tweet of Ammar Ali Jan, the novelist invited the former to come to Karachi for teaching purposes. He added, “I have also just been shown the door by private Habib University where I taught a few semesters. (Not as qualified or committed as you). But I was beginning to like it. Will miss the students.”
