Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi disparaged the PTI-led government’s federal budget saying that even the people involved in making the ‘IMF budget’ do not know what they are doing.

Abbasi questioned how the government planned to meet its revenue target, when it was previously unable to do so. “The government that could not collect Rs4,000 billion revenue, how will they collect Rs5,500 billion revenue,” the former premier stated.

Abassi, also criticized the formation of the 12-member Commission of Inquiry, saying that none of the people in it possessed knowledge about the economy.  The Commission of Inquiry was formed to investigate the ballooning of foreign debts to Rs24,000 billion during the previous 10 years. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Hussain Asgha will head the committee. ”Those [who have] no basic knowledge about the economy will review the decisions of the prime ministers, Parliament and cabinets,” said Abassi.

The lawmaker also expressed strong reservations regarding the government’s new tax policy.  “Taxes would not have had been imposed if the government with its incompetency had not increased the interest rate. The masses are being burdened with additional taxes. The government has also increased gas and electricity tariffs,” he added.
