At least 11 people, including a woman, were killed in a violent attack on Thursday when gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in the Ochat area of Kurram district, according to police. The convoy, traveling from Parachinar to Peshawar, was targeted in the attack, leaving several others injured, including three women.
The region has been experiencing violent clashes between various tribes and groups for months, resulting in numerous deaths. The ongoing violence has led to the frequent closure of main and link roads, as well as the border with Afghanistan. This has caused significant hardship for local residents, as essential goods such as food, medicine, and fuel are in short supply.
Local elders have warned that the continued closure of roads could lead to a major humanitarian crisis. With supplies running low, people in Kurram district are struggling to access basic necessities. Tribal leaders from the Turi and Bangash tribes have raised concerns about the impact of road closures, highlighting the growing food and fuel shortages.
The suspension of 3G and 4G mobile services has further compounded the situation, making it difficult for students to study and businesses to operate. The disruption in communication has left many residents feeling isolated.
In response to previous attacks on passenger vehicles, the main Parachinar-Peshawar road and other routes were closed last month, as authorities feared more violence.
The violence in the region is not new. In September, clashes between rival tribes over a land dispute resulted in 60 deaths and numerous injuries. In August, the two tribes had agreed to a two-month ceasefire after earlier fighting left 50 people dead and 226 injured. The situation remains tense as the area continues to face violence and instability.
