The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has ordered Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ban social media application TikTok on the grounds that it proliferates videos that 'spread obscenity in society'.
The decision was issued during hearing of a petition against the app. PHC Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan was hearing the case and said that the content of TikTok was 'unacceptable for the Pakistani society'. The chief justice added that there are reports of the platform having negative impact on the youth as several cases have been reported in Peshawar.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Director Kamran Gandapur was also present in the court. He was asked by the chief justice whether the ban on the application would hurt it, to which Gandapur said that it would not. Further, the PTA director said that a request was sent to TikTok but no 'positive response' has been received yet.
The chief justice then said that TikTok should be banned in Pakistan unless their officials fulfil the country's request and help precent immoral content.
