US Congress Approves Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act To Facilitate Pakistani Women
Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act was passed by the US Congress on January 1st by a voice vote. The bill will now go to the White House for President Donald Trump’s signature.

The Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act seeks to expand the number of scholarships available to Pakistani women to receive higher education under a merit and needs-based programme.

As per the bills requirement, US agency for international Development will have to award at least 50 percent of scholarships under a Pakistan-based higher education scholarship programme to Pakistani women, from 2020 to 2022. There will be a set criteria for selecting the candidates.

Under the act, USAID is also required to send a yearly report regarding the scholarship to the Congress. The report will include the breakdown of who received the scholarship, who didn’t, what degree the recipients opted for etc.
