A police official deployed for the polio team was gunned down by an unknown motorcyclist in Jhandokhel area of Bannu district on Wednesday.
According to the authorities, the incident took place in the jurisdiction of the cantonment police station. They said that ASI Akhir Zaman was attacked by the gunmen on his way back to the police station after accompanying a polio team.
The attackers managed to escape after the crime, and the body was taken to the district headquarters hospital for medico legal formalities.
No immediate arrests in the case were reported. However, the police have sealed the area and are carrying out a search operation to catch the assailants.
Meanwhile, the slain cop was laid to rest in his native Gulanoor Barakzai village. His funeral was attended by senior officials including the DC Bannu.
