PTI MPA’s Cousin Arrested After Beating Up Judge In Islamabad

Police have arrested a cousin of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Punjab Assembly lawmaker while her husband Chaudhry Khurram is on the run after the duo was booked for assaulting an additional district and sessions judge in Islamabad.

Dawn reported that the Secretariat police have booked the suspects under section 337-A, 337-F, 352, and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The FIR registered by the judge stated that he was beaten up at a petrol pump on Constitution Avenue by two persons who disembarked from a Land Cruiser. As a result, the judge suffered injuries to head, legs, eyes and nose. They also tried to pull the judge out of the vehicle in addition to roughing him up, the complaint stated.

Eventually, the judge resorted to aerial firing which made the attackers flee, the FIR stated, adding that the assailants returned with an intention to beat him again. The FIR said one of the attackers was identified as the husband of MPA Abida Raja, the newspaper reported.

As per the initial investigation into the incident quoted by the newspaper, the driver of the Land Cruiser had honked the judge on Constitution Avenue so he could overtake. Though the judge changed the lane, he gestured the driver in an objectionable way while overtaking the vehicle.

The vehicle approached him when the judge was at the petrol pump, where he was roughed up by the MPA's spouse and the cousin.

Judge suspended:

Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court has suspended the sessions judge for picking a fight with the spouse of the Punjab lawmaker and resorting to aerial firing in the federal capital's Red Zone.

The IHC administration through a circular stated that ADSJ Awan had been placed under suspension. The circular did not mention any reason for his suspension, according to Dawn.

During a hearing of a case, Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that influential people always resorted to compromise to evade the legal proceeding. Without naming the sessions judge, Justice Minallah said a man opened fire into the air in the highly protected Red Zone, another influential person started fighting with him, but later they reached a compromise.

Meanwhile, the sessions judge has filed an application before his fellow judge Faizan Haider Gillani, seeking registration of a criminal case against Chaudhry Khurram under different sections of the PPC.

Raja Zahoorul Hassan, the counsel for ADSJ Awan, adopted before the sessions court that the police were duty-bound to register a case against the alleged attackers who assaulted the judge in the Red Zone in broad-daylight.
