As he was about to give a statement to the media during a protest over the motorway rape incident, writer and director Khalilur Rehman Qamar was called out for making misogynistic remarks against women in past.
However, after a brief commotion, Qamar was allowed to speak. He said he was against Aurat March because the issues faced by men and women were of the 'same nature' and rule of law was the only solution to fix these problems.
In March, Neo TV had arranged a panel on Aurat March. During the show, Qamar, a screenwriter and director, blew off the handle over the slogan ‘Mera Jism Meri Marzi’ and made abusive remarks against Sirmed. The anchor Ayesha Ehtisham of the program did not even once call out the director for his rude behavior towards the rights activist.
Subsequently, the Pakistan Electronic Regulatory Media Authority (PEMRA) imposed a Rs500,000 fine on Neo TV over violation of the code of conduct for allowing drama writer Khalilur Rehman Qamar to make derogatory remarks against fellow panelist Marvi Sirmed.
Furthermore, Qamar was also supportive of the opinion that when it came to rape, men could not say no and hence women were to blame. “If a man is looking at you, then don’t respond. A man doesn’t have the ability to ignore, but a good woman definitely does,” he had added.
The writer-cum-director was also of the opinion that when it comes to infidelity, a man was never at fault and it was women who tempted men into cheating on their wives.
In the same interview, he had said that if women 'want equality, they need to do the same things men are doing. Go and rob a bus, abduct a man and gang-rape him. Only then I would know there is equality'.
Police said the woman, a resident of Gujranwala, was returning to the city from Lahore on Tuesday night when her car ran out of petrol.
Geo News reported that the woman called her husband, who advised her to call Motorway Police for help until he got there. However, the Motorway Police operator excused from helping the woman, saying the emergency beat had not been assigned to anyone.
As she was left to her own devices on the deserted road, two armed men approached the vehicle and smashed its windows. They then took the woman and her children out of the car and took them into a nearby field after cutting the fence along the road to rape her. The report said the woman was also deprived of Rs100,000, jewelry, and ATM cards.
