Women from different walks of life on Friday held protest demonstrations against the gang rape of a woman on Motorway in Gujjarpur area of Lahore and the statement of Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umar Sheikh blaming the victim. Women lawmakers from the PML-N gathered outside the IG office to protest against the incident and seek the police officier's removal.
The protesters demanded exemplary punishment for rapists and immediate removal of the CCPO Lahore for his controversial remarks wherein he blamed the victim for the incident.
The protesting women were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against CCPO Lahore.
The first protest in this regard was held outside CCPO Lahore. The protesting activists not only condemned the barbaric incident but the callous and insensitive statements of the CCPO.
Protests in Lahore against rapists and the statement of CCPO took place on Mall Road in front of Punjab Assembly.
According to media reports, the survivor had called the emergency No. 130 and spoke to the desk giving them her location. The staff on duty gave her a local number where she was told to call for help. The victim called that number and gave them the location too where she was waiting for help.
Meanwhile, Jamat Islami women wing Lahore on Friday protested against the motorway rape incident outside Lahore Press Club. Led by Dr Samia Raheel Qazi, the protesters urged the authorities to bring the rapists to book.
The protesting women were of the view that the number of child-abused and women rape cases is on the rise for the past few months but the governments didn’t take measures to control the situation.
They said the government's failure to eliminate such elements is the main reason behind increase in rape and other cases of sexual violence. The protesting women demanded of the government to make an exemplary punishment for the rapists under the law so that no criminal can get courage to do such a barbaric act.
Human rights activists and people from civil society in major cities of Pakistan, including Karachi have announced protests demonstrations against the incident.
People are enraged and demanded of the government to take measures in order to control such brutal and barbaric elements from the society.
