Shias Shift To Online Majalis Amid Covid Pandemic

As coronavirus forces people to stay at home, Shias across Pakistan have also improvised by shifting to online majalis, barring some gatherings at selected Imambargahs.

Similarly, the ulema and zakireen, who couldn't go abroad due to travel bans in the wake of the Covid pandemic, have started using online forums as a tool to disseminate the message of Karbala, reported Express Tribune.

The newspaper said a Shia cleric decided to deliver sermons/lectures via online video platforms for people who cannot leave their houses because of the pandemic. It further quoted her saying that it would be the first time she would hold an online majlis in decades.

Another cleric said the pandemic has disrupted the usual Muharram practices, forcing hundreds of clerics and zakirs are holding online majalis.

"People can commemorate the month of Muharram indoors, adding that it would hold the same meaning given the circumstances," he was quoted by the publication as saying. He said if people cannot go out because of coronavirus they can turn their houses into azakhanas and participate in Muharram rituals.
