The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has asked 'video-sharing platform Youtube to immediately block vulgar, indecent, immoral, nude, and hate speech content to prevent discord'.
In a statement, the regulatory authority said: "PTA has done so keeping in view the extremely negative effects of indecent/immoral/nude content available on Youtube and to prevent repugnant discord due to the presence of the hate speech and sectarian material."
It said that it has approached Youtube to 'immediately ensure blocking of objectionable content and to prevent the usage of its platform for dissemination of such content'.
In addition, the platform has been also been directed to put in place an effective content monitoring and moderation mechanism so that the unlawful material is detected and remains inaccessible within Pakistan, said the PTA.
The SC had taken notice of ‘objectionable content’ being shared on YouTube and other social media platforms and sought to regulate the social media platforms over ‘indecent’ content.
During the hearing, Justice Amin had questioned had whether the Federal Investigation Agency and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had seen what was happening on YouTube. “There are several countries where YouTube is banned. Try uploading content against America and the European Union,” he had said.
