Over Two-Third Of Govt’s Covid Relief Package Remained Unutilised: Report

Even though the federal government had announced a multi-billion package for the needy during the coronavirus pandemic, the government failed to utilise two-third of the relief package owing to 'procedural measures'.

According to a report in Express Tribune, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet approved the usage of Rs540 billion in this fiscal year after they had remained unspent during the last fiscal year.

The report quoted the ministry of finance statement said that the amount remained unutilised due to procedural conditions under the Covid-19 relief measures announced in FY2020-21. According to the ministry, the government had planned to disburse about Rs770 billion under the head of the Covid-19 relief fund; however, these ministries disbursed less than Rs240 billion.

For instance, Rs50 billion had been announced to provide subsidise items through Utility Stores Corporation but the actual spending was around Rs21 billion. The report claimed that these department didn't  have the capacity to handle the relief package.

In April, PM Imran Khan had announced Rs1.240 trillion economic relief package to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic that had brought the life to a standstill.
