National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Mohammad Afzal Sunday said that much of the rainwater in Karachi had already been drained out when he arrived in the city. He added that cleaning of major storm-water drains in the metropolis will begin on Monday (today).
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad after his visit to Karachi, he said that the action is being taken to ensure that the next few monsoon spells do not cause damage in the city. Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan had asked the NDMA Chairman to visit the provincial capital and start cleaning up the city where rain and urban flooding had wreaked havoc. Khan had authorised the NDMA and FWO to conduct a cleanliness drive in Karachi with 'unlimited funds'. Both organisations were given long-term roles for the purpose in the summary signed by the PM.
The NDMA chairman also said that three monsoon spells had been predicted in Karachi in August. He added that at least 80mm of rainfall was recorded in an hour in some parts of the metropolis in the past few days. Lt. Gen Afzal further told the media that the situation following heavy rainfalls ended up overwhelming the drainage system, which he said was already working beyond its capacity.
