SC Takes Notice Of Matiullah Jan’s Abduction, Orders Police To Record His Statement
The Supreme Court has directed Islamabad Police chief to submit a report on the abduction of journalist Maitullah Jan within two weeks after recording the journalist's statement, saying the police were responsible for the safety of every citizen.

The apex court took notice of the incident as it heard the contempt of court case against the journalist for his tweet pertaining to verdict in Justice Qazi Faez Isa case.

As the hearing started, the SC inquired about the kidnapping of the journalist from Islamabad's sector G-6. The attorney general said that "immediate proceedings" had been initiated in the matter.

CJP Gulzar also questioned why the police haven't recorded the statement of Jan, as he summoned the police chief on the next hearing. "What are the institutions doing?" he asked the attorney general. The CJP ordered police to record the statement of Jan and bring the culprits to justice.

Meanwhile, Matiullah Jan requested the court for time to hire a counsel and submit a reply in the contempt case. The court accepted his request and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.

Pakistan Bar Council and SC Bar Council members also attended the hearing. During the proceedings, SCBC's Latif Khosa, while observing that the journalist was "picked up in broad daylight", said: "Is this a banana republic?" He demanded that the kidnappers be identified from the CCTV footage available with the police.

Former Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists president Afzal Butt insisted that those responsible for the act be brought to light at which the court assured him that "the case was not being wrapped up".

Jan, who was abducted on Tuesday morning by unknown people, was recovered after 12 hours on the outskirts of Islamabad.
