VEHARI: A member of Prime Minister's Corona Relief Tiger Force was critically injured after being stabbed by a shopkeeper during a coronavirus relief drive in Punjab's Vehari district on Wednesday.
According to news reports, the force's volunteer Muhammad Waseen arrived at a shop during the campaign to discuss the precautions for averting the infection. The interaction relating to the advisory soon turned into a verbal scuffle, as both sides exchanged heated words.
Subsequently, the shop owner Muhammad Faisal took out a knife and stabbed Waseem, injuring him critically. He was shifted to the nearby tehsil headquarter (THQ) hospital. Later, the owner of another shop reportedly attacked the shop owned by a Tiger Force volunteer and damaged it.
On June 16, police in Taxila arrested a member of the Tiger Force for taking money from the local shopkeepers against their violation of the official standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Officials identified the member as Mohammad Sadeeq, a resident of Meera Shareef. “The man visited the main market and harassed shopkeepers for their alleged violation of SOPs and demanded money for not reporting the cases,” they said.
On June 13, PM Imran Khan said that more volunteers would be recruited in the force to assist the government in establishing the SOPs. He had also said that he would take input from the force regarding the situation on the ground.
