Islamabad Mayor Suspended For 3 Months On Corruption Charges
The federal cabinet on Sunday suspended Mayor Islamabad Sheikh Ansar Aziz for three months over alleged corruption. Sheikh Aziz has termed the decision ‘political victimisation’ and said that he will approach the relevant court in this regard.

The Ministry of Interior released a notification, suspending the mayor Islamabad for 90 days on alleged corruption charges. The notification noted that Sheikh Ansar Aziz has been suspended so that he could not influence the inquiry initiated against him.

The suspended-mayor commented on the federal cabinet’s decision and said that his suspension was just a reflection of ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s continuous practice of ‘political victimisation’. “The government ignored all the main issues and issued my suspension order on a holiday. This fact is enough to expose the priorities of this current regime. I will approach the relevant court against this politically-motivated decision.”

Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz Senator and member of Local Government Commission condemned the federal government’s decision, saying: “Sheikh Ansar Aziz has been removed illegally, the Local Body Commission can’t remove him in the absence of opposition.” The PML-N leader said that he and former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf were busy in Senate and National Assembly session respectively and the commission took the decision in the meantime, so the said decision without their presence seems like an act of conspiracy.

“The decision of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s 'companions' to suspend the elected mayor has set a very wrong precedent to follow,” he added.
