ISLAMABAD: Young Pakistan Pharmacist Association (YPPA) has moved Supreme Court against Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health, Dr Zafar Mirza and requested the initiation of a criminal investigation against him for the ‘illegal price hike of medicines’.
“Prime Minister Imran Khan has appointed Dr. Zafar Mirza as Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Health, after the termination of former Health Minister Mr. Amer Kayani on the alleged corruption of illegal medicine price increase of up to 400%; billions of rupees were embezzled”, the application filed by YPPA Secretary-General Dr Furqan Ibrahim says.
It adds that Zafar Mirza had claimed on various occasions that the prices of the medicines would be reduced and the ‘entire looted money will be recovered from pharma companies’.
However, the application claims that the prices continued to rise after Mirza’s appointment as well. “It is alleged that Dr. Zafar Mirza hands in glove with Club of 50 (a cartel of 50 large pharmaceutical companies) took a bribe of billions of rupees to facilitate the large pharmaceutical companies”, the application says.
The application also brings up Zafar Mirza’s alleged involvement in alleged smuggling of ‘around 20 million face masks and protection gears on the outbreak of COVID-19’
It says that Dr. Zafar Mirza had imported Typhoid Vaccine from India worth Rs 3 billion from a source unapproved by WHO and also claims that the vaccine was untested.
“There was alleged money laundering of Rs 2.5 billion in the said transaction of Typhoid Vaccine imported from India”, it adds.
Dr Zafar Mirza has also been alleged of appointing corrupt people at key positions and favouring ‘his NGO associates and friends’ as consultants on enormous salaries.
Moreover, Mirza has been alleged of appointing junior doctors as heads of hospitals administered by the federal government.
