18 people have reportedly been killed in the most populous country of Africa, Nigeria, by their security forces for violating the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The country's human rights organsations also claimed that this number is higher than the fatalities caused by the virus itself.
Metropolitan Lagos and the capital Abuja are also under total lockdown, and restrictions are set in other regions in a bid to contain the virus.
According to official figures, coronavirus has so far infected 407 people in Nigeria, of whom 12 have died so far.
The government has also deployed the army and police to ensure strict measures be taken against the violations, which have also caused unrest on the streets.
The country's National Human Rights Commission said it had received and documented “105 complaints of incidents of human rights violations perpetuated by security forces” in 24 of Nigeria's 36 states and Abuja.
Of these complaints, “there were 8 documented incidents of extrajudicial killings leading to 18 deaths,” it said.
