The ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters have started an organised campaign against Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, demanding Prime Minister Imran Khan to sack the minister for taking ‘liberal’ stances.
The PTI followers initiated an online campaign on Twitter under the hash tag #SackShireenMazari on Tuesday. The campaigners were of the view that the minister wanted to transform Pakistan into a ‘liberal’ country. They severely criticised Shireen Mazari's stance against the capital punishment of child rapists and other criminals.
“Despite being a staunch PTI supporter I request PM Imran Khan to sack Shireen Mazari as she is continuously promoting liberalism in Pakistan. She is trying to take us away from our basic norms and values,” a PTI supporter demanded.

Another user said that the ‘nation’ was demanding justice for victims of rape, while Shireen Mazari was demanding ‘mercy’ for the rapists. She further questioned, “How can she be called minister of human rights?”

However, activist and digital rights expert Usama Khilji supported Shireen Mazari and said that he was wondering as to why the PTI followers were targeting the federal minister, who is ‘competent’ and ‘qualified’ for a job she has been doing professionally.
“The PTI probably doesn’t deserve someone highly competent, party loyalist who has never been part of another party or a dictator’s government, and takes principled positions on issues. Shireen Mazari has put Ministry of Human Rights on the map, mobilised people, and has been working on critical HR reforms,” he added.
