The former Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Ehsallullah Ehsan – three months after escaping from Pakistani authorities’ custody – claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan had written two letters to Hakimullah Mehsud, the then chief of TTP in 2011 and 2012, ‘begging’ to get a permission to hold political rallies in South Waziriatan.
Indian weekly The Sunday Guardian reported that PM Imran had sought TTP permission to ensure that he and his party members were not attacked in South Waziristan, while doing political campaigning before 2013 General Elections.
The Indian news outlet quoted Ehsanullah Ehsan, who was very close to Mehsud, as saying: “I was the spokesperson of the group (TTP) between 2011 and 2012. It was my responsibility to draft replies to such letters. The letter was brought to us by Imran Khan’s party leaders. The letters were signed by Imran Khan himself. On both occasions, I drafted a reply to the letters after taking inputs from the TTP leadership and it was then sent to Khan.
The escaped high-profile terrorist further said that he could not reveal the contents of the letter and the reply at the moment but he said he might do that in the near future to reveal the relationship between the Pakistani politicians and TTP. “They say something in private and do something else in public,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that in the same time period in 2011 and 2012, Hakimullah Mehsud was carrying a reward of Rs 50 million on his head.
