Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar on Tuesday said that his governed-province is doing ground breaking research and Pakistan would become the first country to introduce the coronavirus vaccine.

The Punjab CM during his visit to University of Health Sciences (UHS) said that the experts of the institute [UHS] were working day and night to come up with a cure for the contagious disease. “Pakistan could become the first country to prepare vaccine for coronavirus” the provincial chief executive said.

Usman Buzdar said that he wanted Punjab to take the lead in this regard. “I would not hesitate in exhausting all available resources for the research in helping to end the pandemic,” he added.

Moreover, Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid while talking about the on-going research said that the chloroquine phosphate could be used as a cure in treating the infected coronavirus patients. “A recent research has found out chloroquine, a medicine prescribed for treating malaria, to be very beneficial and could be used in treating the coronavirus patients,” the minister said.

Dr Yasmin said that the Punjab government was not only taking steps to curb the spread of coronavirus but all-out efforts were also being made to prepare effective medicines to treat the affected patients.

Dr Javed Akram, the vice-chancellor of UHS, has also said that the Pakistani medical experts have begun research on chloroquine phosphate to treat the coronavirus patients. “There is a strong possibility that chloroquine may be effective in treating COVID-19,” he added.
