Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has termed Jamiat Ulema-e Islam – Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulanan Fazl-ur-Rehman’s call to forcefully stop Aurat March 2020 ‘undemocratic and totally unacceptable’.

PPP secretary general and former senator Farhatullah Babar, in a statement issued on Sunday, said that the Constitution guaranteed freedom of assembly to everyone and that could not be curtailed by anyone by hurling threats.

“It is unfortunate that that those who claimed to hold the supremacy of the constitution are talking about using of force to deny the women their right to hold peaceful protest, and exercise freedom of expression,” he added.

PPP Parliamentary Leader Sherry Rehman tweeted on Sunday, that her party stands in solidarity with Aurat March and it will resist every attempt to sabotage the protest. “Democratic countries handle all such equality and empowerment public conversations with tolerance,” she added.

The PPP secretary general further said that his party was committed to upholding the rights of women, including their right to hold peaceful demonstrations on the occasion of International Women Day to voice their grievances and demand an end to discrimination against them.

Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari also took to Twitter to extend her support for Aurat March, she said that women’s voices should be heard and their constitutional rights should be protected. “Any act of suppression will only make our voices louder and stronger,” she added.
