Karachi’s sole electricity supplier K-Electric has refused the directives of Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah to waive off the electricity bills under Rs 5,000 for the ongoing month.
Geo News reported that following the development, a spokesperson of K-Electric said the due dates for bills under Rs4,000 have been extended and that users could pay their dues by April 10.
"Despite facing challenges, the K-Electric is providing uninterrupted power supply to the citizens. To ensure this, it is necessary to purchase fuel,” the spokesperson said.
The KE representative added that the provincial and federal governments still need to pay Rs240 billion worth of pending dues.
On Sunday, Murad Ali Shah had directed electricity and gas companies (KE, KESCO, SEPCO and SSGC) to not collect payments of bills for the ongoing month for consumers whose electricity bill is less than Rs5,000 and gas bill is less than Rs2,000.
CM Sindh directed the electricity supplier to charge the dues as installments over the next 10 months as businesses and offices remain closed owing to the coronavirus lockdown. “Gas and electricity connections will not be cut during the next two months,” the provincial chief executive added.
