Comedian Umar sharif’s son filled a complaint that her sister Hira Sharif had died due to an ‘illegal kidney transplant’ carried out by Dr Fawad Mumtaz at an undisclosed location in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK).
According to a news report published in DAWN, a joint team of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Human Organ Transplant Authority (HOTA) on Tuesday, while acting upon the complaint filed by the comedian’s son Jawad Umar, raided the house of transplant surgeon Dr Fawad Mumtaz in Bahria Town, Lahore but the doctor had already left his home to avoid arrest.
Jawad has accused the doctor of charging Rs3.4 million for the ‘illegal’ organ transplant surgery, that was carried out in AJK. He said that his sister Hira had faced serious complications just a week after the operation. The victim’s brother, however, did not disclose whether the sharif family was aware that this was going to be an illegal transplant.
He alleged that his sister was brought to a private hospital at Raiwind Road in a life-threatening condition, where she succumbed to the illness on Monday night.
Following his application, HOTA formed a four-member committee to probe the allegations, the newspaper has quoted officials as saying that Dr Fawad, who is serving at the Lahore General Hospital, was notorious for running an illegal organ trade network in various parts of Punjab.
