Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has said that the arrest of Pashtun Tahafuz Movement’s (PTM) leader Manzoor Pashteen and his colleagues has troubled him.

The president took to twitter to raise his concerns regarding the arrest of PTM’s founding leader. “I am troubled by the arrest of Manzoor Pashteen and his colleagues. I fully echo the concerns raised by Amnesty International in this regard and hope for their immediate release. While our region is suffering from atrocities caused by violent extremism and terrorism,” he said.

He further asked the government of Pakistan to support and encourage peaceful civilian movements and to deal with them through dialogue and engagement.

“Governments in the region must support and encourage peaceful civilian movements for justice and must avoid any means of force and violence against these movements. On the contrary, differences with such peaceful movements must be resolved through dialogue and engagement,” the president tweeted.

Manzoor Pashteen was arrested by police in Peshawar on Sunday night for allegedly giving ‘anti-state’ speeches at public gatherings. Following this development, PTM announced countrywide protests against the arrest of its founding leader.
