Trans Woman Gunned Down In KP By Own Family

Maya, a transgender woman from Nowshera, was killed by her family after she moved to Peshawar.

According to a BBC report, Maya and her friend Mehak both had a troubled past where their families had constantly abused them. They had escaped the torture of their families three times, but after the third, Maya was gunned down by her family.

The story of the killing has many loopholes in it and the police have not investigated them properly. Maya was taken away from her home in Peshawar on charges of stealing. Her guru and house did go to the station to get her released but it was the last time they saw her.

The guru, Naina, says that the police said that Maya has gone home with her family on her consent. Though according to sources, it was Maya’s father who signed to take her home. Maya had no say in it.

Maya’s body was found a bit later in Nowshera.

The police have arrested over a dozen of Maya’s relatives but there of them have been released.

Human rights organizations say that almost 70 trans women have been killed in KP since 2015 and the police barely does anything to solve the cases.

Trans people in Pakistan are recognized as the third gender by Pakistani law but the social stigma around them is still leads to them being treated as second class citizens.
