PU Appoints Two Ex-VCs Who Faced NAB Inquiries As Professor Emeritus

The Punjab University (PU) has appointed two former vice chancellors, who have faced National Accountability Bureau (NAB) inquiries in the past, as professor emeritus.

According to a news report in Dawn, PU has appointed former VC of the university, Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran as full-time professor emeritus of Physics while Dr Muhammad Akram Chaudhry, who was formerly the VC of University of Sargodha, has been appointed as full-time professor emeritus of Arabic.

Both the professors have faced NAB inquiries in the past, based on allegations of illegal appointments and establishment of sub-campuses of the university.

The report cited a source as saying that the appointment matter had been postponed twice. He added that the professor emeritus would be paid Rs125,000 per month, with their duties including the promotion and supervision of research.

NAB had arrested Dr Mujahid Kamran over allegations of corruption, illegal appointments and nepotism.

Meanwhile, the registrar of the university said that the appointments were made according to a criteria set by the Higher Education Commission, which says that any person who had served as a vice chancellor at a public university could be appointed as professor emeritus.
